Gawd! Gawd! Gawd!
It's 2007, there's an Ontario provincial election campaign underway, and the big debate is whether or not public funding for Catholic education should be extended to Judaism and Islamism and all the other crazy tribal based belief systems that are essentially all the same anyway.
Meanwhile, sane people don't even think public funding should be provided for Catholic education (any more than public funding should be provided for Catholic healthcare, but let's just ignore that other elephant heavily and expensively squatted in the living room of every GawdDamned community in Ontario). It's just that, well, public funding for Catholic education benefits from being part of that famously unalterable reality called "The Status Quo".
Otherwise... the way we see it - there is public/equitable/logical - and then there is faith-based/bigoted/crazystupid.
That's how most people in Ontario feel about all this religious shit, I'm sure of it. I mean, go ahead, read this:
Do you seriously think the above is why we are funding an entire duplicate system of education in this province?
Me neither. But that's the excuse that is trotted out, time and time again, for why funding for Catholic education was extended - IN THE 1980s!!! - rather than eliminated altogether and Catholic children welcomed to join Jewish and... well... I dunno - did we have Muslims in the 1980s?... and heathen children in public schools all across Ontario.
As for the nasty rumour circulated the Catholic community about public schools not teaching religion:
1) They do teach religion.
2) They don't indoctrinate Protestantism.
Anyway, I don't really care if we continue to publicly fund an entire separate school system, because I like how it brings out the crazy in all the other religious lobby groups and exposes them for the tribalist shitdisturbers that they are - AND makes Catholic education defenders look like the elitist "One True Faith" snotheads that they are.

Also, I like how it makes me feel so totally above it all as a member of that vastly superiour all-welcoming multicultural rainbow coalition called... well... we don't have a name, as such... I know, I know - let's not give ourselves a name and that way, we won't become just another separatist, divisive, private group of annoying grasping political media hounds.
