Oh, Now I Get It

I guess Stockwell Day was talking about this case then he wondered why Canadians aren't as outraged by the daily toll taken by drunk drivers on our roads as we are about RCMP officers Tasering people to death:

DrunkCopsDrivingCars

Well, yeah. That's pretty bad. I mean, I'm sure the cop feels pretty awful, too, about having killed someone while drunk driving - who wouldn't. It's the rest of it that makes me mad, the obvious covering up and non disclosuring of facts by ALL the cops involved in the investigation, the fact that one of the cops has been promoted since the incident, and this:

Info request refused

THE Free Press submitted a request under the Manitoba Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to Winnipeg police for notes, statements and reports on their involvement in the Harvey-Zenk case.

The request was submitted to learn what information city police had gathered from the officers who were with Harvey-Zenk on the day Crystal Taman was killed.

It was refused on three points:

1) It was an unreasonable invasion of privacy.

2) The information requested was compiled by police as part of an investigation to be disclosed only at prosecution.

3) Disclosure of the information could negatively affect the conduct of existing or anticipated legal proceedings.

I mean, transparency matters - particularly where there has been wrongdoing by a police officer or a group of police officers. Because, otherwise, citizens end up not being able to trust the police. And that's when we become like one of those other countries we think we're so much better than that we actually invade them to prove it.
