A CanWest Editorial Board Vs A Feminist Student Leader
Okay, Feminists. I think we have ourselves a live one here. If you haven't cancelled your subscription to a CanWest newspaper, please do it today:
Look, fellas. This isn't about debate or free speech or having your say. This is about Feminists taking a stand against those who would deny us our legal right to a publicly funded abortion. The right to abortion services isn't up for debate, especially in the Mainstream Media.
Remember?
You don't even cover a woman's legal right to obtain a publicly funded abortion when Members of Parliament are attempting to take it away - by recriminalizing it through such backdoor Bills as Bill C-484.
Remember?
And you call yourselves the Mainstream Media. Tsk, tsk.
By the way, I finally saw "Jesus Camp" yesterday. I advise everyone to rent it and then read a CanWest editorial. See if you can spot the difference between American Fundamentalist Christians on the Right and the men who write CanWest editorials.
I don't know how to fight the Monolithic Mainstream Media (hey, MMM, the upside down of WWW) in this country, almost all of it owned, run, and editorialized by men, but I do know one thing - nobody who believes in women's equality with men should be paying for a subscription to a CanWest newspaper. It's that simple.
Kudos to Kelly Holloway, president of York University's graduate students' association. You've left the big boys sputtering in their editorial pages because you did what Feminists need to do from here on in: "Never retract, never explain, never apologize; get things done and let them howl."
As long as this is Canada, abortion rights for women are not up for debate. Just keep your eye on those New Conservatives, because, if they have their way, we won't be Canada much longer.
