No Means Harder

Ah, those engineering students. This time, it's a controversy at Ottawa U, where "Oral Otis", the engineering students' newsletter, published a sex advice column that contained some misogynistic material. Oh, and more (ahem) obviously, material that mocked the disabled. Here is the editor-in-chief's apology: That'sRight,I'mALittleShitWithoutTheDisturber

I'm no expert on insincere apologies, but that one reminds me of when I'd ask one of my kids to apologize to another one for something or other and they'd quite willingly run up to the offended party and shout, "Sooooorrrryyy!" in her (occasionally, his) face.

As every mother knows, 3rd party demanded apologies are for suckers.

Still, I'd like to see the material because my guess is, it just wasn't funny enough to get away with the misogyny. Engineering students aren't exactly smart with the humour, if my experience hanging around with engineering students at U. of T. for the few minutes I was trapped in a shopping cart waiting my turn to be thrown into a shower in a men's residence, fully clothed in a Calvin Klein suit, is any indication.

I wasn't even a student at the time and was simply walking through the campus on my way home from work, having forgotten about orientation week, when I was set upon by drunken dufii sporting purple arms, "A girl! Get her!" When I realized what was happening, I played possum, so terrified/powerless was I in the situation (they were a lynch mob in number and drunk enough to be irrevocably stupid).

So, I dunno, Zach, my little man. Tragedy + time = comedy. I'd say engineering students in Canada have a few more decades to go before anybody's going to find violence against women jokes in your newsletters very funny.

By the way, here's Zach's original reaction to the complaint:

Er,IronyIsMyLetterToTheFulcrum,Too
