Selfish Parents
As someone who thinks it's ridiculously selfish to have kids and not the ticket to sainthood some parents would prefer to believe it is, here's my take on the decision by Manitoba Child Services to remove her children from the home of a mother whose husband scrawled a swastika on their daugher's arm and sent her to school.
Your kids are not yours. Not technically, not any other way, they are your responsibility. Kids are people, citizens, members of society entitled to the same protection in law that you are and it is the duty, by law, of other adults in society to report, on their behalf, abuse or suspicions of, to relevant authorities.
That's something we've got right in our society, in spite of what rightwingers claim about familty values and father knows best and nanny states and all of the nonsensical claptrap they trot out whenever they are reminded that parenthood isn't a right, it's a privilege.
Yup. Sorry, American and Candian Right. Parents don't have rights simply by virtue of being parents - anymore, especially since any moron (see above) can be a parent. The mother in this case? Sure, she doesn't deserve to have her kids taken away just because her political views are offensive - she deserves to have her kids taken away because she neglected to report the abuse by her husband of her daughter.
