When Is 1st Degree Murder Not 1st Degree Murder?
I guess in backward patriarchal theocracies, men get away with murder, as long as the victim is female, but why has the Canadian media imported the expression "honour killing" to excuse Muslim men of first degree murder? It's as if the press is saying it's less of an offence when Muslim women are murdered by Muslim men - in Canada - than when Christian women are murdered by Christian men - in Canada.
Of course, it's a slippery slope, as they say, and domestic murders of women by men are generally tainted in the media by some version of "she must have asked for it" - the taint coming via Conservative punditry, of course. Although, it's no longer legal in this country to be raped by our husbands so I guess we can thank Conservatives in government for not... oh wait... it was a Liberal government that made marital rape illegal - in 1983.
Nevermind.
Anyway, I'm just not sure why the Canadian media thinks the murders of some Canadian women are honourable. It seems kind of backward and patriarchal, if you ask me.
