Well, I've never had them, but I'm guessing women are treated worse by crabs.

How official bilingualism continues to thrive is beyond my ability to comprehend.
It is truly perverse and seems to thrive in the hideously inverted world we live in today.
French immersion here in Ottawa is out of control. The schools are unable to graduate more than a handful of functionally bilingual Anglos even when close to 70% of all Anglo primary students are enrolled in an immersion program. (All figures made up but accurate none the less)
The school board does not measure (never has, never will) the effectiveness of any of their immersion programs in a significant way. They do not publicize numbers like:
How many children were streamed out of an immersion program for each of the last 5 years?
Why were they streamed out?
How many children were streamed out when they moved from primary to secondary schools?
How many students graduated from a secondary school immersion program?
How many of these students went on to enroll in a French post secondary program?
How many of these students went on to graduate from a French post secondary school?
The answer to the last question is of course 42 (in the last 5 years). Now that's value for money government style given the billions that are spent on this nonsense.
Do you know any Anglophone Canadians who have benefited from official bilingualism?

You're just being boring now. But here's something interesting - the government is having difficulty filling bilingual positions and meeting diversity requirements. So if you're from Haiti and reading this - come and git yer jahbs!jahbs!jahbs!

yup. tons.
bi- or tri-lingualism is pretty much the norm in the western world, so a society commited to a single language is, relatively speaking, retarded. it's a shame that the state has to step in to make things "official", but then, one way or another the state always ends up dealing with the sick, the old, the young and the retarded.
i don't see how you make the leap to conclude that the success of elementary immersion should be measured by post-secondary enrollment. by the same reasoning, we should probably reduce subsidies to science programs as well, since humanities are by far the most popular programs at the post-secondary level.
in any case, that's not the purpose of immersion. the purpose is to efficiently provide language skills. it's much easier to learn a second language while you're learning your first. most people never advance beyond eighth grade in their native tongue (and don't need to). it's unclear to me how equivalent knowledge of a second language at that level is a bad thing.

It's certainly not the norm in Canada and the US. Who cares about the rest of the world? Why does the state have to step in? If you feel like it, please describe how some of those "tons" of Anglos have benefited.

That our system doesn't seem to be interested in doing this was a point I was trying to make. Are you a fascist?
You referred to "language skills" in general (I assume) whereas I was clearly talking about French language skills. Your ability to obfuscate is impressive. You also used the phrases like "the state" and "efficiently provide" together without using a single laughter emoticon. This convinces me that you are indeed a fascist. Would I be correct in assuming that pathos is something that is not lost on you?
